2. What formats do the reports have to be in for implementing OmniReports?
OmniReports can only work with reports in electronic format i.e. they have to be stored somewhere in a computer or on secondary storage media in order to be brought into the OmniReports database. Further these reports should be in ASCII format as OmniReports recognizes only this format by default. For e.g. a report saved as a text file is in ASCII format and can be worked upon.

A converter is a utility written to convert non-ASCII format files into ASCII format files so that they can be loaded and defined in OmniReports. 10. How are Reports Organized in OmniReports?

OR follows a 3-tier structure. The first level is the Report Group (e.g. Marketing, Accounts, Production or any other such group). The second level contains the different Report Types under each report group (e.g. General Ledger, Sub Ledgers, Statement of Accounts, etc. under Accounts Group and so on). The individual reports, which could be daily, weekly, monthly, etc., depending on the report generation frequency, form the third level. Each individual report is called a Report Instance and a collection of instances is called a Report Unit.

16.What is COLD Technology?

COLD is an acronym for "Computer Output on Laser Disk". According to AIIM 's TR2 Glossary of imaging Technology 1991, COLD refers to the "technique for the transfer of computer-generated output to optical disk, such that it can be viewed or printed without use of the original program". A COLD system consists of software and hardware to store and index Computer output on optical media.

17. What are the benefits of COLD?

It provides for easy retrieval, indexing and storage, which lowers the cost of archiving and retrieval normally associated with paper documents and at the same time makes the process more efficient.

As the information are stored electronically it means savings on storage space, printing expenses and costs of maintaining bulky, fragile paper documents. Storing in electronic format means that unlike paper reports whose records can only be accessed on a case-by-case-one-person-at-a-time-basis these electronic reports provide managers across the enterprise more accurate and specific information which is in a format that can be exported to MS-Excel etc for analysis.
Newgen has Internet enabled its COLD technology to tap the pervasive nature of the net, which allows customers and suppliers to view electronic bills and related documents while allowing employees in remote locations to view reports of relevance.

18. How many pages of reports can come in one CD through OmniReports?
Since the reports are cut in the compressed format, the no of pages that comes in one CD are 3, 50, 000 pages to 5,00,000 pages with a data of 2.5 to 3 GB

19. If somebody says "I have an RDBMS already in place. Why do I need OmniReports?" How do you think you would answer this question?
OmniReports is a user-friendly enterprise-wide report archival and sharing system. Its graphic user-friendly interface enables you to run complex queries on the reports to extract the required information, which a layman cannot do on a RDBMS. It compresses data to a seventh of its normal size in an RDBMS and frees resources for other applications. It enables you to share reports with your colleagues over the Intranet or Internet, which is not possible with a RDBMS. Due to the compression technique, the search conducted through OmniReports is much faster than through an RDBMS.
